Johannesburg, South Africa — On 26 July 2025, the historically significant House Villa in Kew opens its doors for NEW MONUMENTS, a sculpture exhibition that reimagines the relationship between space, form, and contemporary South African identity. Presented by Kalashnikovv Gallery and Lunetta Bartz, in collaboration with the BMW Collectors Co., the show runs until 7 September 2025.

Once the home of celebrated Italian–South African sculptor Edoardo Villa (1915–2011), House Villa is itself a living sculpture—a visionary architectural work by Ian McLennan that reflects Villa’s sensibility for volume, light, and texture. Now, more than a decade after his passing, this iconic home becomes a site of conversation between past and present, memory and materiality.

NEW MONUMENTS brings together a formidable group of artists— among them William Kentridge, Gabrielle Goliath, Unathi Mkhonto, Michael MacGarry, Kyle Morland, and Edoardo Villa—whose works span the representational to the abstract. Each sculptural intervention offers a multidimensional exploration of contemporary life in South Africa: its challenges, contradictions, and continually shifting terrain.
